In a speech, Xiaoqiang Zhang, Permanent Vice Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, China Center for International Economic Exchanges said:

“This year marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of business relations between China and the UK. Over the past 65 years, the China-Britain ŶǮ and its predecessor have made outstanding contributions to the development of China-UK economic and trade relations.

Under the guidance of the consensus of the two governments, the business industries of the two countries strengthened cooperation to promote healthy and stable development of economic and trade relations. The bilateral trade volume between China and the UK has reached USD 80.4 billion in 2018, and the UK's exports to China have tripled in the past decade.

In terms of investment, China's actual foreign investment from the UK reached USD 2.48 billion in 2018, an increase of 150% year on year, the highest level since 1997. The cumulative direct investment of Chinese enterprises in the UK reached USD 19.88 billion by 2018, with more than 500 enterprises established in the UK. The UK has become China's second largest investment destination in the EU. Cooperation between the two countries has brought development opportunities and space for growth for enterprises from both sides, employment opportunities, improved the well-being of the two peoples, and has achieved mutual benefit and win-win results.

Finally, I hope you will work together to promote more "golden fruits" in the "golden age" of China-UK relations! Thank you!”?

In his speech, Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles KCMG LVO, Chair, ŶǮ said:

“This year marks the 65th anniversary of the China-Britain ŶǮ and of business relations between China and the UK. ŶǮ has been at the heart of the UK-China trade relationship since our establishment. To this day, we continue to drive economic and commercial dialogue between China and the United Kingdom – supported by Her Majesty’s Government in both Britain and China; and by deep collaboration across Chinese government ministries, departments, trade associations and industrial bodies.

In my role as ŶǮ’s incoming Chair, I am delighted that you have joined us this evening as we mark the occasion and celebrate the achievements made together in our trade relationship. I am proud to take up these challenges, and I thank the outgoing Chairman, Lord Sassoon. In his six years and two consecutive terms in post, Lord Sassoon has presided over a number of significant milestones – including two Prime Ministerial visits to China, the State Visit of President Xi Jinping and the golden era in bilateral relations.”

During this period, the ŶǮ has played a vital role in promoting dialogue on trade, developed thought leadership and insights into China’s key economic policies including Belt & Road and Made in China 2025, while at the same working with our partners from both Britain and China to secure real outcomes for the businesses who trust in us.

I am both optimistic and excited about the future of our bilateral relationship as we enter a post-Brexit world with new challenges and new opportunities; and I look forward to the continuation of a prosperous golden era in the commercial relationship between China and the United Kingdom.”
